The Power and the Glory

is a masterful work of art recently shared with me by producer, Larry Blakely.  Larry has had an impressive Hollywood music career, but for  30 years, his dream has been to produce an album of LDS hymns arranged and performed by world class musicians.  At last he has realized his dream, and by so doing, has blessed the world with an incredibly inspirational recording that I have recommend to everyone.  Enlisting the talent of legendary Hollywood music arranger/producer, Tutti Camarata, and a 100 piece orchestra, The Power and The Glory lifts listeners to a heavenly level.  I felt my spirit soar above all mortal concerns as I recognized my favorite LDS hymns presented in a form never imagined.  I was filled with peace... perhaps that of heaven's love, for it was profound.

MUSIC INDUSTRY LEGENDS CREATE EPIC ALBUM OF LDS HYMNS

Have you ever wondered why someone hasn't harnessed major talent in the music and film industries to create a magnificent musical work for the restored church? Something like a musical soundtrack of Ben-Hur, but utilizing the music of inspired latter-day hymns. This was LDS producer Larry Blakely's dream.

He enlisted the talents of Maestro Camarata, with over 400 albums to his credit and a resume that looks like the Who's Who in the music industry. Camarata scored and conducted numerous orchestral albums for London Records, was Music Director for Walt Disney for 16 years in addition to scoring albums for legendary artists like Jascha Hiefetz, Billie Holliday, Louis Armstrong and many more. Then legendary recording engineer Bruce Botnick was recruited. With over 26 gold albums, 5 platinum albums and a Grammy award to his credit, Botnick has also recorded over 60 major motion picture music soundtracks.

Camarata started by studying the selected LDS hymns and reading the history of each. His goal in scoring the album was to paint musical pictures of what the words of the hymns implied. Camarata approached the project very seriously and spent two years scoring the album. He said his album was very important and he wanted it to be the best work he had ever done. The album was recorded utilizing over 400 of the same professional musicians who play on major motion picture music sound tracks. These musicians comprised an orchestra of over 100, a 180 voice adult choir, a children's choir, pipe organ and antiphonal brass. No expense was spared.

Some of the highlights on the album include a powerful 8 minute rendition of Come, Come, Ye Saints; starting with the sounds of wagons and a lone harmonica playing the melody, as the music builds, you can almost feel the challenges, trials and sorrows of their journey and then experience the joy of the triumphal march of the saints entering the Salt Lake Valley as the heavenly hosts burst into song. The children's medley includes I Am a Child of God and We'll Bring the World his Truth with each verse sung in a different language along with the musical instruments and flavor of that country bridged with a sensitive treatment of Teach Me to Walk in the Light. In The Spirit of God, musical pictures are painted which follow events at the dedication of the Kirtland Temple. Other selections on the album include O My Father, I Believe in Christ, Families Can Be Together Forever, I Stand All Amazed, Beautiful Savior, I Know That My Redeemer Lives, Because I Have Been Given Much, I Need Thee Every Hour and I Know My Father Lives.

We at LDS Living have heard this remarkable album, and think you will rejoice when you hear it. This epic recording is over one hour in length and is already a treasure in many LDS homes. Since the album was recorded, thousands of listeners have telephoned, sent e-mails and letters to it's creators, expressing their gratitude for this inspirational latter-day work. The album is entitled "The Power and the Glory" and is available on-line, at Deseret Book and better LDS bookstores.
